Dream Come True: Obama Administration Announces Relief for DREAMers

On Friday June 15, 2012, President Obama announced that the Secretary of Homeland Security issued a memorandum directing that certain young aliens will be able to apply for relief from deportation under certain circumstances.

The memo specifically permits undocumented youth who were brought to the United States as small children and who have been raised and educated in communities in the U.S. to apply for deferred action. This action would permit them to remain in the U.S. without fear of deportation. They would also be permitted to apply for a work permit and, thereby, be allowed to pursue careers.

On Monday, June 18th, Alejandro Mayorkas, Director of the United States Customs and Immigration Services (USCIS) stated in a phone conference with stakeholders, that the application for relief would not trigger the institution of removal proceedings against the parents or other family members of the young applicants.

Under the new policy, deferred action will be offered to young people between the ages of 15 - 30 who came to the U.S. before the age of 16 and have been in the country for at least 5 years, have no criminal history, and are in the country as of June 15th.
