When Should You apply for Social Security Disability or SSI?

Some people may tell you that you can wait for a year to apply, but that is rarely the best advice.
The main reason to apply early is that Social Security Administration has such a long backlog of cases, every day you wait simply means that you will wait longer for your claim to be decided.
Social Security’s rules allow you to apply if you have a condition that will keep you out of work for a year or which will result in death. If you had to stop working because of medical or mental condition and do not know when you may get back to work, there is reason to believe that you could be out of work for at least a year. If you are able to get back to work before a year passes, you can simply withdraw your claim. Waiting will only delay how long Social Security takes to get to your case.
