Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is administered by the Social Security Administration and uses very similar rules to the Social Security Disability (SSD) program.  The difference between SSI and SSD is that SSI is a needs-based program.  You can only get SSI if you meet certain income and asset maximum limits. Social Security's regulations explain that "the basic purpose underlying the SSI program is to assure a minimum level of income for people who are age 65 or over, or who are blind or disabled and who do not have sufficient income and resources to maintain a standard of living at the established Federal minimum income level."

The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research estimates that 11.3 million people age 16 to 64 have a severe work disability.    The SSI program exists to protect low-income workers who become sick or injured and cannot work.  Title XVI of the Social Security Act covers Disability benefits. The Social Security Regulations that govern these claims are found in Title 20 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
